Pint can purchased from Tasty Beverage Co in Asheville, NC. Shared with Sam back in Sydney.
Pours a mid-dark-brown colour, with some clarity at the edges. Head is a fine cap of pale mocha that settles into a creamy ring. Carbonation is fine and powdery. Lacing is minimal, but it forms in large dots. Looks decent.
Nose is quite pleasant, but it's not the rich, smooth sweet milky stout that I thought it was going to be. It's dark, and sits more on the overly toasted and sharp end of the spectrum. with a little bit of leather and just a spritzy hit of milk and strawberry in the finish. As it warms, there is a bit of nuttiness, but it's a dense, roasted character even then.
Taste is quite similar. There's a nuttiness forming the backbone, but it has a weird berry brightness above it that melds with a creaminess—at least the feel, if not that flavour of the lactose. The finish is smooth, and has a slight kick of roasted bitterness. It works nicely.
Feel is soft but with a slight boozy kick.
Overall, it's pretty good. I think it doesn't quite deliver on its promise, but it does have some lovely pleasant notes to it. I don't want to drink it despite myself‚ and despite the booze though, which is one of the key things I want from a big stout like this.
